[ He arrives early and on military time, where an hour early was on time and on time was late and he sits in one of the available seats in the front lobby with an old book in his lap. He's been doing some reading up on the history of the city, from published historians with credible sources. Credibility being ambiguous here made sourcing that a little difficult.
He does look out of place, in clean clothes, and zero interest in the comings and goings of the staff. He knows who he's looking for and that's who he's waiting on. ]
[ Staff right now comprises of only James and Rogue, so Alec won't see a lot of comings and goings once he's there. James comes over shortly after his arrival, looking a little worse for wear than his usual— not that a new aquaintance would know. He's got a couple bruises from recent gang fights, scruff on his face he hasn't bothered shaving lately, the bags under his eyes more noticeable when he's paler than average.
He stops a couple feet away from the guy, tipping his chin at him. ] You're the guy who texted me?
[ The smaller the better, because Alec's not looking for a populated break room or an excuse to make friends. He wants the hands-on experience and to be paid for it so he can eventually work on putting together and purchasing a motorcycle of his own.
Alec moves the book to the side and stands up to greet him when he's addressed, he puts a hand out for one of those professional shakes. ]
[ James watches the hand for a moment, then takes it in a firm but brief shake. ]
James. Come on, let's head in.
[ He tips his head for Alec to follow, as he leads him further into the garage. By comparison, the place looks far more well-kept than James himself, organized to a near obsessive degree. There is some grease and oil stains here or there but overall the place looks weirdly spotless for a garage, and no doubt far more organized than Alec remembers. ]
So, what can you do with a bike? Build one from scratch or just standard repairs? Thought you might show me some of your skills. [ It's what Daryl did to say whether or not James was good, so. ]
[ After the quick shake Alec slips his hands into his pockets, he's not exactly dressed to fill the space under the hardware of a piece of machinery but he's also not against it. ]
I can do both, but I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts you're not looking to stand there while I disassemble and reassemble a bike so what are we looking at?
[ There's a decent few in the lineup for fixing and Alec goes to the first most obvious one there, external issues visible without messing with anything on the bike specifically. ]
Well, this one... the chains are worn down and the tension isn't right, and that's just at a glance.
we can handwave/jump ahead the actual bike work part, if you want!
[ Easier is better, James doesn't need Alec checking out the bikes in worse state to be able to assess his skill level. He nods as Alec describes the issues with one of the bikes, relatively pleased with the observation. ]
Get you a suit, we get to work on that? [ He'll stick close by just to be sure, but so long as his skill matches what he's saying, the job's his. ]
[ Alec nods with some casual acceptance at the direct order and grabs a set of coveralls to step into. It wasn't long ago he got to abandon the whole sir, yes, sir routine and so despite following the directive he doesn't acknowledge it verbally and just gets straight to work. Doing everything in tandem with the guy, they work well together and manage to button up the bike in good time.
Alec wipes the oil off of his hands with a spare rag and tucks the same rag in the pocket of his loaner coveralls. ]
So, what do you think? After the round of pro bono work what do you think? Do I make the cut?
[ It's been a good while since James has had others under his command, and while there are some signs of the military man in him, he's gotten more used to a casual approach, more working together and less him barking orders for others to follow.
More importantly, he's attentive to what Alec does, judging his skill and knowledge, and by the end of it he seems fairly pleased. He even shoots the guy a smile, however faint and brief. ]
Yeah, you're good. You can start tomorrow. [ He gestures to the suit. ] and you can keep that one, if you want.
[ Alec's got a natural knack for excellence in everything he does, some of that genetic splice work making him a quick study when it came to most subjects. Alec's military background wasn't something he mentioned but it's there, in his posture, and his reflexes, can't be raised as a government product and unlearn the indoctrination and overexposure you came into the world with. ]
Sure, thanks. I'll keep this one and I'll see you bright and early. I appreciate it.

Not keen on spending the night here. How about you look at one of these bikes and you can tell me what needs fixing, show me how you'd do it.
[ He just wants to know that the guy wouldn't fuck something up while working, is all. ]
